According to AyurVeda each human being has an unique body constitution characterized varying combinations of the 3 doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The basic belief of Ayurveda is that their careful balance is essential to good health and that the whole body – physcially, mentally and spiritually should be in harmony to restore and maintain health and longevity.
Abyangham Massage
Abhyangam is the Sanskrit word for oil massage following ayurvedic principles. It is prescribed as a daily routine in the ancient ayurvedic texts and involves applying vegetable oils infused with herbal preparations on the body or particular parts of the body in a specific style to obtain the desired results. In Ayurveda, the Abhyangam massage has become popular because of its effective way of conditioning the body. Abhyangam can also be used therapeutically. The massage and oils used during it are designed around each individual according to their Dosha or body constitution.
How does it work?
Abhyangam is a therapeutic treatment which can increase the production of white blood corpuscles and antibodies, so providing more resistance against viruses and diseases. This helps the defense mechanism in the body and increases immunity towards environmental changes. In this way abhyangam massage is a protector, preserver and a rejuvenator, increasing self-confidence and will power. To massage is to exercise the nervous system.
What does it involve?
The Sensei Abyangham begins with a seated Indian head, neck & shoulder massage to loosen and relax. Once on the table luxurious amounts of warm herb infused Ayurvedic oils are poured over the body and massaged into the skin. The massage is deeply relaxing and harmonises, detoxifies, strengthens and revitalises the entire body. This massage also improves lymph flow and stimulates the immune system. Whilst providing a tired person with a new energy, it simultaneously calms and strengthens the nervous system. This treatment is traditionally fast, firm and invigorating but can be tailored to suit individual preference. A disposable thong is provided for use during treatments. I am unable to offer full Abyangham to male clients though I can adapt most of it's principles into a holistic massage.
What is it good for?
Abyangham is both invigorating and relaxing. It stimulates the lymphatic system so protecting against coughs, colds and other illnessess. It's brisk movements encourage blood flow and improve circulation whilst also improving skin and muscle tone. Passive movements encourage joint mobility.
What are the benefits?
This type of massage rejuvenates the whole body and protects against illness. It beautifies the skin and delays aging, combats fatigue, reduces stress and induces sound sleep, restoring balance and vitality. Regular oil massage increases circulation and thus prevents aging of the skin, tones muscles, improves growth and immunity, prevents creaking of joints, reduces body numbness and excess fat. The natural vitamins and minerals in the oil help in rejuvenation and thus helps maintain a smooth skin and give luster to the hair.
What are the side effects and when should it be avoided?
Massage of any kind should not be carried out on clients with fever, contagious or infectious diseases. Clients with cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, epilepsy, diabetes, sciatica or those who are pregnant should obtain consent from their GP before treatment. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
